Pro Tips for Washing BJJ Gi

If you’re a BJJ practitioner, your Gi is more than just a uniform—it’s your training partner, your symbol of dedication, and an investment in your journey. But here’s a question many of us skip: Are you washing your Gi the right way?

We’ve learned this process through trial and error, and we’re excited to share it so you can keep your Gi fresh, durable, and ready for the mats. No fancy products, no complicated steps—just simple, effective tips that work. Let’s break it down:

  • Don’t let your Gi sit after training: As soon as you get home from rolling, toss your Gi in the washer right away. Sweat and odor set in fast, so the quicker you start washing, the easier it is to get rid of them.
  • Start with a quick vinegar rinse: Grab a small cup of white vinegar, pour it over your Gi, and run a quick wash cycle. Vinegar is magic for cutting through sweat and lifting stubborn training odors—no harsh chemicals needed. After this rinse, your Gi will be “blank” (no bad smells left).
  • Do a full wash cycle next: After the quick rinse, run a full wash with your favorite detergent. We use a scented one to add a fresh smell (since the vinegar already got rid of the bad odors). This two-cycle method makes sure every bit of sweat and dirt is gone.
  • Add scented dryer sheets when drying: Throw a few scented dryer sheets in the dryer with your Gi. This keeps it soft and infuses it with a nice, clean scent. Your Gi will come out looking bright—no dull, gray tones!

We want to be clear: We’ve tested this process extensively with all types of BJJ Gi fabrics—from pearl weave cotton blends to premium twill—here in our factory. It’s the method we’ve trusted for all our Gi care, and it works perfectly for keeping Gi white and in great shape for years.

A well-cared-for Gi not only looks better but also lasts longer. Your Gi works hard for you on the mats—give it the care it deserves between trainings. Follow these steps, and next time you show up to class, your training partners will be asking how you keep your Gi so fresh. See you at the mats!
