As a leading BJJ Gi manufacturer and high-performance martial arts gear supplier based in China, we handle the technical production for some of the world’s most respected brands. A common question we receive from gym owners and international distributors is: "Can one Gi do it all?"
While they may look similar to the untrained eye, the construction logic behind a Judo Gi and a BJJ Gi is fundamentally different. For coaches and students, choosing the right "armor" is critical for performance, safety, and longevity. Here is our professional factory-floor breakdown.
From a pattern-making perspective, the "cut" is the first major difference we implement in production.
Judo Gi (Traditional & Loose): We cut Judo Gis with a generous amount of fabric. The sleeves are wide, and there is significant room in the armpits and chest. This is a functional requirement for Judo’s explosive throwing techniques; international rules (IJF) mandate this "slack" so opponents can establish a fair grip to execute throws.
BJJ Gi (Slim & Athletic): We design BJJ Gis with a "tapered" fit. In ground grappling, excess fabric is a liability that gives your opponent a handle. Our BJJ patterns feature narrower sleeves and a tighter body wrap. It’s built to be as difficult to grab as possible, fitting more like an athletic suit than a traditional robe.
The durability of a Gi starts with the loom. We use different weaving techniques to match the stress points of each sport.
Judo Weaves: These typically use Single Weave or the heavy-duty Double Weave. A Double Weave Judo Gi is incredibly thick—often 750gsm to 900gsm—acting like a shield against the high-velocity friction of being thrown onto a mat.
BJJ Weaves: Modern BJJ requires a balance of lightness and tensile strength. We primarily produce Pearl Weave and Gold Weave for BJJ. Additionally, we use Ripstop or high-density twill for the pants, specifically reinforcing the knees to handle constant friction during guard passing.
The lapel (collar) is where our factory’s technical expertise truly matters.
Judo Lapels: Made from multiple layers of heavy cotton. They are thick but remain pliable enough for the "snap" required in standing grip fights.
BJJ Lapels: Almost all BJJ Gis we manufacture feature a vulcanized rubber or EVA foam insert. This makes the collar stiff and hard to manipulate, providing a built-in defense against collar chokes. As a bonus, the foam doesn't soak up sweat, keeping the Gi lighter and more hygienic during long rolling sessions.
Judo: Highly regulated. We generally only produce these in White or Blue with minimal, standardized branding to meet competition requirements.
BJJ: A "blank canvas" for branding. Our production lines for BJJ involve complex embroidery, woven patches on the shoulders and shins, and even sublimated interior neck liners for a premium look.
| Feature | Judo Gi | BJJ Gi |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Intent | Optimized for throwing & grip-play | Optimized for ground defense & mobility |
| Fit / Cut | Oversized, wide sleeves, long skirt | Tailored, narrow sleeves, short skirt |
| Material | Heavy Double Weave (Armor-like) | Pearl/Gold Weave + Ripstop Pants |
| Collar | Compressed Cotton (Pliable) | EVA Foam/Rubber (Stiff & Anti-microbial) |
| Regulation | Strict (IJF Standards) | Flexible (IBJJF Standards) |
Judo Practitioners: You must stick to a Judo Gi. Most traditional Dojos view BJJ Gis as "illegal" equipment because the narrow sleeves and stiff collars provide an unfair advantage.
BJJ Practitioners: Invest in a BJJ Gi. While a Judo Gi is durable, its loose fit makes you an easy target for "Lapel Guards" and chokes.
If you are stocking a pro-shop for a new academy:
The Entry-Level Move: We recommend a lightweight, plain white Single Weave Judo Gi. It’s the most versatile and cost-effective option for a beginner’s first month.
The Professional Move: Once a student commits, they should switch to a sport-specific Gi. A BJJ Gi is safer for fingers (less likely to get caught in narrow sleeves) and offers a much better "feel" during ground transitions.
At our facility, we don't just sew fabric; we engineer performance. Whether you are looking for traditional Judo uniforms or cutting-edge BJJ gear, we provide full-scale OEM and ODM services to bring your brand's vision to life. From custom fabric weights to bespoke embroidery and private labeling, we are your "boots on the ground" for high-quality martial arts manufacturing.
