You've trained for months. You've saved up for a competition. You show up to the venue — and the referee pulls you off the mat because your Gi doesn't pass inspection.

It happens more than you'd think.

At Bolton, we've manufactured competition-grade BJJ Gis for over 18 years. We work with brands across North America, Europe, and beyond — and one of the most common questions we get from both gym owners and individual practitioners is: "How do I actually know if my Gi is IBJJF legal?"

Let's break it down, straight from the factory floor.

What Does "IBJJF Approved" Actually Mean?

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is the world's largest BJJ governing body. Their rulebook includes strict guidelines on what a competitor's Gi must look like and how it must be constructed. "IBJJF approved" doesn't mean the federation stamps every single Gi — it means your Gi meets their published specifications.

Here's where most practitioners get confused: no official IBJJF stamp or certification tag exists. It's entirely on the manufacturer and the athlete to ensure compliance.

The IBJJF Gi Requirements — Broken Down
Material
  • Gis must be made from cotton or cotton-like fabric only.
  • The fabric must not be so thick or hard as to prevent an opponent from gripping it.
  • Woven fabric is mandatory for all age divisions — no stretch or knit constructions.
  • EVA or similar stiffening material inside the collar is permitted, as long as it stays within the official size and rigidity specs.
Color
  • Permitted colors: White, Royal Blue, or Black only.
  • The entire Gi — top, pants, and collar — must be one uniform color. Mixing colors between top and pants is not allowed, and a collar that differs in color from the rest of the top will fail inspection.
  • Painted Gis are forbidden, unless the paint forms an academy or sponsor logo and is placed only in approved patch regions. Even then, if the paint transfers onto an opponent's Gi during competition, the athlete will be required to change.
Patches
  • Patches may only be placed in IBJJF-authorized regions as shown in the official rulebook diagram.
  • All patches must be made of cotton fabric and properly seamed — iron-on or unseamed patches will be removed on the spot by Gi inspectors.
  • Patches found in unauthorized regions will be removed before the athlete is allowed to compete.

Belt
  • Must be 4 to 5 cm wide, durable, and colored according to the athlete's rank.
  • All belts require a black tip, except for black belts (white or red tip).
  • The belt wraps around the waist twice and is tied with a double knot — tight enough to keep the Gi top closed.
  • Once tied, each end of the belt must hang 20 to 30 cm in length.
Gi Jacket (Top)
  • The jacket must reach the athlete's thigh when standing.
  • Sleeves must come to no more than 2 cm from the wrist when the arm is extended straight and parallel to the ground.
  • Collar (lapel) thickness: maximum 1.3 cm.
  • Collar width: maximum 5 cm.
  • Sleeve opening at full extension: minimum 7 cm diameter — wide enough for a referee to grip.
Gi Pants
  • Pants must reach no more than 2 cm above the tibial malleolus (ankle bone).
  • Pant opening must also meet the 7 cm diameter minimum at full extension.
  • No pants of any kind may be worn underneath — except women, who may wear elastic, body-hugging pants that are shorter than the Gi pants.

Under-Garment & Additional Rules
  • Men may not wear a shirt under the Gi top.
  • Women must wear a stretchy, body-hugging shirt beneath the Gi top (short or long sleeve, any color). A one-piece swimsuit or gymnastics top is also permitted.
  • All athletes must wear briefs-type undergarments — thong-type is not permitted.
  • The Gi must be clean, dry, free of tears or mending, and odor-free. A dirty or wet Gi will be flagged at inspection.
The Fabric Factor: What the IBJJF Doesn't Specify (But You Should Know)

The IBJJF rulebook focuses on construction and dimensions — it doesn't mandate a specific GSM. But fabric weight has a direct impact on competition performance:

  • Too light: The Gi feels flimsy, grips unevenly, and is more prone to tearing under competition pressure.
  • The competition sweet spot: Most top-tier competition Gis we produce at Bolton use 450–550 GSM pearl weave for the jacket — dense enough to resist grips, light enough to stay under weight limits.
  • Pre-shrunk treatment is non-negotiable. If your Gi hasn't been pre-shrunk at the factory level, washing it before weigh-in could push your sleeves or pants out of spec.

At Bolton, every competition-grade Gi goes through a pre-shrink process before final QC inspection — so the measurements your customer receives are the measurements they'll compete in.

Common Reasons Gis Get Rejected at IBJJF Events

Based on feedback from brands and gym owners after competition season, the most frequent inspection failures are:

  • Sleeve too short — usually post-wash shrinkage on a Gi that wasn't pre-shrunk at the factory.
  • Collar too thick or too wide — a manufacturing defect. Even 1–2 mm over spec gets you pulled.
  • Wrong shade of blue — "navy" or "dark blue" are not "royal blue." IBJJF referees have discretion, and some are strict.
  • Unseamed or misplaced patches — iron-on logos and patches outside authorized regions get removed on the spot.
  • Torn seams or visible mending — flags a quality issue and disqualifies the Gi immediately.
  • Wet or odorous Gi — yes, inspectors will flag this. Cleanliness is part of the rulebook.
For Gym Owners & Brand Managers: How to Order IBJJF-Compliant Gis at Scale

If you're outfitting your academy or launching a private label BJJ brand, compliance can't be an afterthought. Here's what to look for in a manufacturing partner:

  • Full spec sheet transparency: Your manufacturer should provide exact measurements — collar thickness, collar width, sleeve opening, GSM — before production begins.
  • Pre-shrunk guarantee: Non-negotiable. A Gi that shrinks post-delivery is a customer service nightmare.
  • Royal blue color accuracy: Ask for a Pantone-matched swatch before full production. Dye lots vary, and "blue" means different things to different factories.
  • Cotton-compliant fabric sourcing: Since IBJJF mandates cotton or cotton-like woven fabric, your manufacturer must confirm material compliance at the sourcing stage.
  • Patch placement review: A good OEM partner flags non-compliant layouts during design review — not after 500 units are sewn.

At Bolton, our in-house design and QC team reviews every order against IBJJF specs before a single panel is cut. We've helped brands avoid costly recalls and reorders by catching compliance issues at the sample stage — not after delivery.

Quick IBJJF Gi Compliance Checklist

Before your next competition — or your next bulk order — run through this:

  • Color: White, Royal Blue, or Black (top, pants, and collar all match)
  • Material: Cotton or cotton-like woven fabric
  • Sleeve comes within 2 cm of wrist (arm extended)
  • Jacket reaches the thigh
  • Collar ≤ 1.3 cm thick, ≤ 5 cm wide
  • Sleeve & pant opening ≥ 7 cm diameter
  • Pants reach within 2 cm of ankle bone
  • Belt 4–5 cm wide, double-knotted, ends hang 20–30 cm
  • Patches cotton, seamed, in authorized zones only
  • No painted designs outside patch-permitted regions
  • Pre-shrunk before delivery
  • Gi is clean, dry, tear-free, and odor-free
