What Should You Check Before Approving a Custom BJJ Gi Sample?

A custom BJJ Gi sample can look great at first glance. But before you give the green light for bulk production, it’s worth checking a few details that can make a big difference later—fabric, fit, stitching, branding, and overall finishing.

1. Make Sure the Fabric Is Right

Start with the basics. Does the sample actually use the fabric you asked for?

For a BJJ Gi, the jacket and pants usually use different materials. You might have a 380 GSM Pearl Weave jacket with twill or ripstop pants, depending on the product you’re building.

Check the weave, GSM, fabric composition, color, and finish. If the sample uses a temporary fabric or trim, make sure you know what will change in bulk production.

2. Check the Fit, Not Just the Size Label

An A2 label doesn’t tell you everything.

Lay the Gi flat and check the key measurements, such as jacket length, chest width, sleeve length, pant length, and waist.

Then try it on if possible. A good BJJ Gi should allow natural movement without feeling too tight or leaving too much loose fabric.

For brands, this matters even more when you want consistent sizing across future reorders.

3. Look at the Areas That Take the Most Stress

BJJ Gis take a lot of pulling and gripping, so the high-stress areas deserve a closer look.

Check the underarms, side vents, knees, crotch, cuffs, and collar.

Look for things like:

  • Loose threads
  • Skipped stitches
  • Uneven seams
  • Poorly finished edges

Good reinforcement and clean stitching are small details, but they say a lot about how the Gi was made.

4. Double-Check Your Logo and Branding

If you’re building a private-label BJJ brand, the branding details matter just as much as the Gi itself.

Check the logo size, placement, embroidery, patches, woven labels, and size labels.

A logo might look perfect on a digital mockup but feel too large, too low, or slightly off once it’s actually placed on the Gi.

That’s why the physical sample matters.

5. Make the Approved Sample Your Bulk Production Reference

Once the fabric, fit, stitching, and branding are all approved, make sure everyone is working from the same final version.

Your approved sample should become the reference for bulk production and QC.

This helps reduce confusion and keeps the production team, QC team, and buyer aligned.

So, What Makes a Good BJJ Gi Sample?

It’s not just about whether the Gi looks good.

The real question is:

“Is this the exact Gi I want my bulk order to look and feel like?”

If the answer is yes, you’re much closer to a smoother bulk production run.
